MaDIH, a digital innovation hub to promote the adoption of technologies in Madrid's industrial sector

Coordinated by AECIM / MCA and supported by FI Group, in November 13th the Expression of Interest was presented to the Ministry of Industry MaDIH, (Manufacturing Digital Innovation Hub) as a collaborative, cross-cutting and multisectoral HUB model, with a clear business vocation that will promote the adoption of digital technologies within the industrial sector.


The project was born with the aim of promoting digital transformation between the industrial production fabric of Madrid. In addition, it focuses on the drive of Industry 4.0 and smart and green manufacturing through various technologies: artificial intelligence and cognitive systems, simulation and modeling, additive manufacturing (3D printing) and big data. Following its presentation to the Ministry, MaDIH is intended to be recognized by the European Union as one of its centres of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) and thereby foster a regional industrial ecosystem that promotes industrial policies of digitization and productive transformation.


Partner fabric consists of tractor companies (IVECO), associative business entities; these include the Madrid Metal Companies Association (AECIM), Madrid Automotive Cluster (MCA), Aerospace Cluster of the Community of Madrid (MAC), NEOBIS Association of Graphic Communication and the Business Association of Food Industries of the Community of Madrid (ASEACAM); digital enablers (Bosch Spain and IMDEA Networks), scientific-technical organizations such as IMDEA Energy, the University of Nebrija and the University Institute of Automotive Research of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM-INSIA); financing and innovation organizations (Fi Group) and business accelerators and innovation (Wayra - Telefonica).


MaDIH will have, among others, the following objectives:

·       Digitization of the SMEs.

·       Creation of a Madrid industrial ecosystem.

·       Provision of technological services.

·       Advice and fundraising and funding management.

·       Startup acceleration services.

·       Training and mentoring.

·       Development of collaborative projects between large companies and SMEs

November 26 is organized online RIS3 forum: Circular economy, chances for the Liberec region. Circular economy trends in the textile industry will be represented here by Czech Technology Platform for Textile.

EXTRATEX – European TEXtile-TRAnsport-Sustainability paradigm for industrial clusters EXcellence in cross-sector innovation

The partnership aims at enhancing the level of excellence through strategic plans and joint strategies; EXTRATEX will bring together industries from clusters in different industrial sectors in different European countries, to set up new collaborations in technological innovation for textile, transports and sustainable materials (including plastic).

Increased contacts among different industrial sectors in Europe will allow for an improved exchange of opportunities and know-how. The key areas for the strategic development and the set-up of new collaboration opportunities are sustainability, Industry4.0 and digitalisation, and new business models.

This webinar is a tool for discovering the opportunities offered and sought by textile, transport and sustainable materials companies, in terms of smart manufacturing and industrial modernisation. Many practical examples and best practices in this domain can be discovered, opening to new cooperation possibilities with clusters, institutions and companies from other countries and sectors.

First Virtual Exchange Programme from EXTRATEX

EXTRATEX partnership between textile, automotive and plastic sectors is happy to announce the first fully VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME. The Virtual Exchange is an exclusive 3 days event, implemented online, where visiting organisations can discover at close distance the opportunites offered by Slovak plastic sector. SPK, The Slovakia Plastic Cluster, will host the event and showcase specialities, innovative technologies, products and commercial opportunities offered by local companies and institutes.

SPK and their companies will open their virtual doors to enter the production departments and their competencies for one full day. The second day will be dedicated to B2B meetings, that visitors can book with the Slovak actors on a dedicated e-platform. The third day will see an interactive workshop, mainly based on biomaterials, with experts and facilitators able to involve participants and bring cross-sector cooperations one step further. Promoting policies and procedures which integrate social, environmental, ethical, human rights or consumer concerns into business operations are crucial components for a company’s competitiveness while achieving a positive impact on society.

With that in mind, Fomentex carried out a comprehensive number of courses on various subjects regarding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, not only with the Textile Sector in mind but also reminding the attendees of the very important aspects of Social Responsibility, promoting a more sustainable and equal environment.

Due to the ongoing public health crisis regarding the ‘COVID-19’ outbreak, most of the activities proposed were set on an online platform, but that didn’t stop the 193 participants of showing and participating actively on the various debates after each session training, addressing specific issues, sharing their perspectives and learning new ones.

As a result of the very positive and enlightening experience, Fomentex is already focusing on the next event.

Virtual mission in the Netherlands : discover the Dutch mobility ecosystem & meet companies from all over Europe !

European Strategic Cluster Partnerships for Excellence
News Photo Extratex is part of the ESCP-4X partnerships initiative gathering 69 cluster organisations from 21 EU and COSME participating countries.

European Strategic Cluster Partnerships for Excellence (ESCP-4x) are transnational cluster partnerships selected under the European Cluster Excellence Programme as part of the European Commission’s COSME programme. The action aims at facilitating cross-cluster networking and learning, to support the professionalisation of specialised and customised business support services to SMEs. The action is will help drive the development of cluster management excellence and formation of strategic cross-regional collaboration between industrial clusters across Europe.

The third generation of European Cluster Partnerships for Excellence received the new “ESCP-4x” label. This aligns them with the other Cluster Initiatives of the European Commission, and highlights the new “ClusterXchange” activity of the action (more information on the two first generations of Cluster Excellence partnerships can be found here).

ESCPs-4x are tasked with the following activities:

  • Cluster management skills development to boost excellence in delivering SME support
  • Cluster strategy setting at individual and European partnership levels
  • Support to the implementation of these strategies (e.g. through twinning, networking, and joint collaboration activities for SMEs)
  • Implementation of the pilot ClusterXchange programme

The ClusterXchange programme supports short-term exchanges to better connect Europe’s industrial clusters and ecosystems.

The first wave of ESCP-4x (2020-2021) is composed of 13 EU Cluster Partnerships bringing together 69 cluster organisations from across 21 European and COSME participating countries. The action was kicked-off on the 3rd February 2020 for a period of two years (until 2021). More information on the industrial and geographical sectors covered can be found in the figure below. Extratex H2020 project launched in March 2020
News Photo The Extratex project, coordinated by NTT, has been launched in March 2020.


The partnership aims at enhancing the level of excellence through strategic plans and joint strategies; in particular, EXTRATEX will bring together clusters in different industrial sectors with a high potentiality of collaboration in technological innovation and technology transfer, namely textile, transports and sustainable materials.
The project will enhance innovation capacities, business models, knowledge and skill levels and other key competitive factors that will determine future business opportunities and increased capacities for European industrial actors. Only by developing advanced strategies in cross-sector domains and implementing them through comprehensive action plans the European industry can maintain its global market share and current position vis-à-vis emerging non-European competitors.

Strategic thematic priorities

  • Capacity building and cluster strategy definition for cluster managers
  • Definition of a partnership strategy, as well as 6 individual cluster strategies for the partnership members
  • Increase of inter-regional cooperation
  • Increase exchange of knowledge and technical skills
  • Increase of management capacities for cluster staff, by reaching excellence certification
  • Increase of technology transfer opportunities
  • Organization of B2B and C2C events
  • Definition of a ClusterXchange pilot scheme; at least, 50% of the supported exchanges will involve SMEs cluster member of different sectors
  • Dissemination and awareness raising activities

Target group/audience

  As the European Cluster Excellence Programme requests, the EXTRATEX action refers to all cluster organizations and business network organizations, SMEs that are cluster members and scaling-up support organizations from COSME participating countries. Besides, regional authorities are considered potential target group ion EXTRATEX project.

Expected benefits

  • Better access of clusters to innovation opportunities and collaboration for cross-sector VCs set up
  • Increased knowledge of R&D results with TRL and transferability (new materials, advanced manufacturing systems, ICT and photonic applications etc.), available for a fast transfer to the industrial level
  • Increased quality, flexibility and environmental performances of industrial products and services to the final markets, by undertaking joint actions helping to overcome constraints and issues affecting the final consumer
  • Better access to knowledge through new cross-regional RTD activities, technological and commercial partnerships in key areas of common interest, such as innovations addressing societal challenges, key enabling technologies, non-technological innovations or access to new advanced materials
  • Advanced technical skills for cluster organizations
  • Increased contacts among different industrial sectors in Europe for an improved exchange of opportunities and know-how.
