Slovak Plastic Cluster Conference – 16 June 2022, Nitra, Slovakia
News Photo

On June 16, 2022, after a year, representatives of the member companies of the Slovak Plastics Cluster (SPK) met again in Hotel Mikádo in Nitra, Slovakia to evaluate the year 2021 and the first half of 2022, also to recall the milestones achieved by the cluster in past 13 years and to outline the upcoming six months in 2022.

As usual, the meeting of the SPK general assembly was not only a formalized meeting but created also an opportunity to point out the present and future functioning of the SPK. It was the response of the members to the very critical issues of the increasing input costs of plastic companies (energy and materials).

More than 35 SPK representatives and guests who accepted the invitation developed discussions that can move the members of the cluster further and thus create a background for very interesting activities. In this way, member companies can get one step ahead of non-member companies. The conference was full of challenges and ideas. The SPK Project manager, Mgr. Veronika Doležalová, presented the SPK  initiatives, including 3 European projects, EXTRATEX, PERCY, EPIC, and one national, InCluNet.

The project EXTRATEX (COS-CLUSTER-2018-03-02- European TEXtile-TRAnsport-Sustainability paradigm for industrial clusters EXcellence in cross-sector innovation) was presented to the audience with its main goals, initiatives and missions realized. The project manager reminded the two missions from the last year, one virtual done by SPK (March 2021) and one realized by Czech partner CLUTEX (September 2021). The presentation followed by presenting missions in detail from 2022 – first the Spanish mission organized by FOMENTEX, visiting the Valencia textile Eco-system (April 2022), second the mission to France – LYON with host organizations, Gold Label Clusters, TECHTERA, and POLYMERIS (May 2022). Mr. Juraj Majerský, Managing Director of company Wittmann Battenfeld SK spol. s r.o., as an active participant of the mission, representing the SME company, gave a deep look at the mission by presenting its goals and outcomes. The next two missions, the TechTextile International Exhibition in Frankfurt am Main (June 2022) and the mission to Italy – Prato (October 2022), were also outlined to the audience.

Eco-friendly bioplastics are becoming a reality in Slovakia
News Photo Eco-friendly bioplastics are becoming a reality in Slovakia

Global problems with plastic waste are undeniable; a solution that would greatly help is the use of bioplastics completely degradable without a negative impact on the environment. Developed by the STU scientists under the leadership of Professor Pavel Alexy of the STU Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, nonoilen exhibits exactly the above-mentioned characteristics. It is unique and admired in Slovakia as well as abroad.

As its name (nonoilen = no oil) suggests, it is a special plastic material containing no oil. Conventional plastics, as we know them, can be defined as a class of chemicals belonging to polymers; some show the same structure as the substances we are made of, so they do not pose a problem. However, synthetically produced plastics exhibit different properties given them intentionally; they have become weather-resistant, and, unlike ordinary natural polymers, they hardly decompose.

Professor Alexy's objective was rather seeking technical solutions to the existing polymers instead of de veloping the new ones. “The first boom of biodegradable polymers produced from renewable sources came in the 1970s. It is worth to say, that biodegradability does not mean bio-renewability. Both are equally necessary,” says Professor.

There are biodegradable polymers produced from crude oil. Then, there are polymers made of renewable sources, such as starch, which is less harmful for the environment in terms of green energy. “When burning polyethylene made of oil, or burning the starch polyethylene, we produce carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere. Consequently, to produce a new polyethylene, you have to extract oil to make it; yet in case of producing the starch polyethylene, you just root a plant that will consume the carbon dioxide.”

Biodegradation

The generally accepted definition of “biodegradable” as “degradable in nature” is not entirely correct; it certainly does not work in such a way that we throw out the bioplastics somewhere in the forest and then expect it would perfectly decompose there. Even an ordinary apple would not decompose in sterile soil, rain and air. “Just take an apple grown in your own garden without spraying; it will last for a very short time, while a beautifully polished apple from the store will last much longer, precisely because it is chemically treated, sterile,” explains Professor. Sterile means that there are no bacteria, fungi or yeast. Simply, the rotting process is nothing but the microorganisms starting to consume a healthy apple, as they need carbon, nitrogen and biogenic elements to create their own DNA, i.e. to reproduce. They begin to enzymatically decompose mass of the apple (what is actually called rotting), making large molecules small by "chopping them up", and then taking them in pieces in their cells. By destroying those pieces, their metabolism creates simple molecules used to build their own DNA and other substances necessary for the life of a new cell. This is what bio-degradation is. Composition of the bioplastics must therefore allow the microbes to 'cope' with their enzymes.

Bacteria, however, do not crawl, so simply throwing the bioplastics out certainly will not work. Biodegradable plastics should be placed in compost, soil, water or wherever microbial activity is present.

Synthetic plastics degrade without microbes

But why is such decomposition of synthetic plastics impossible? Here we come to protein, the DNA that replicates during cell multiplication.  Replication requires appropriate material. “To put it simply, if cells kept growing infinitely, they would consume all biogenic elements, and life would stop, as all the building material would run out. That is why dead bodies decompose in nature and return to circulation,” explains Professor. To both, the formation and extinction processes, water is essential; our bioplastics therefore must be built so that the microbes can “work” with the water during the decomposition process. That's why there is no polyethylene in nature; bacteria are not able either to “make” it or even decompose it, since they cannot put water into it. Of course, the material is subject to oxidation and degrades under the effects of solar radiation; just like an old greenhouse which often falls apart in a single season, falling into disuse. Synthetic plastics have been invented to last hundreds of years, and therefore stabilizers have been added to prevent decomposition. Yet if buried in the ground, they would decompose even longer than in the air, as they degrade just without microbes.

So how did our scientists produce biodegradable bioplastics?  “We managed by using a mechanism similar to the nature: folding our plastics out of the polymers with hydrolyzable bonds in the main chain, i.e. polyesters from renewable raw materials. The “living world” down there in the ground can handle such materials. Bacteria, fungi and yeast can then split a long molecule by enzymatic hydrolysis into smaller molecules, and to receive them subsequently through the cell wall, decomposing and metabolizing it to carbon dioxide, use water and a portion of carbon for synthesis to replicate their DNA and build a new cell. Of course, besides carbon, other elements are needed; decomposition of plastics can therefore only take place in conjunction with other organic matter, e.g. in compost,” explains Professor.

Plastics - one of the causes of global warming

Besides the environment pollution, synthetic plastics also contribute to global warming. This brings us to the beginning of life on Earth; when the water began to cool and condense, life in the oceans arose in the form of unicellular organisms that needed carbon, which was only in the atmosphere at that time. So the nature "invented" chlorophyll which functions as a catalyst for synthesis; consequently, carbohydrates, the first reservoirs of energy, could be produced. “Protein (i.e. DNA), a building block of life, requires at least carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, which were also plentiful during that period. Some of those elements were in the water, others in the air. Chlorophyll was needed for interconnection; just like haemoglobin transferring oxygen into our bodies,” explains Professor.

When green algae appeared, they took COfrom the air, which consequently decreased the COconcentration, thereby decreasing greenhouse gas as well as the temperature of the Earth. Greenhouse gas whether methane or CO2 lets the sunlight reach the Earth that absorbs it and then returns it outside as heat radiation which, however, cannot leave the atmosphere anymore. Energy is accumulated, while less and less heat being removed; the light passes through CO2, but the heat cannot, so it is a one-way road. Moreover, the thicker the COand methane layer, the thicker the barrier, and thus the planet gets overheated; heat is not abducted, but radiation keeps reaching us.

In prehistoric periods, on the contrary, the layer was thinning down owing to the green plants growing on the Earth. Some of the converted energy went into space, and the Earth's temperature kept decreasing. “When the plants reached dry land forming forests, the huge green reflection area consumed a huge amount of CO2. The temperature had fallen again, and then life became possible even for animals,” explains Professor. When the whole system came to equilibrium, the cooling stopped. The following orogeny, slow creeping motion of tectonic plates, changed the Earth, burying the green matter (dead trees) under the layers of mud. Depending on the temperature and pressure at a particular location, the green mass was transformed to crude oil, natural gas, or coal. “By mining coal, carbon in the form of CO2 is returned to the air, which poses a problem at least as big as plastics floating in the ocean. That is why we need to switch to renewable resources of both, materials and energy. ”

Do biodegradable plastics contribute to saving the Planet?

“Our planet does not need to be saved, she will take care of herself; it is ourselves to be saved. Yet, instead of taking necessary actions, we keep opening the scissors by emitting CO2 into the air and destroying the forests that could absorb it,” says Professor.

So, if we need fully eco-friendly plastics, they can be made of e.g. corn which consumes CO2 to grow. The bioplastics produced like that will later biodegrade, returning part of the carbon into the soil. Full bioplastics must be renewable, compostable and returned to the soil. “Just like our bioplatics. We wanted more than a biodegradable one. There are plenty of bioplatics biodegradable and made of partly renewable sources and partly synthetics; this is but a "bath" effect. "

Bath effect

We frequently hear people reasoning:  this product is better because it produces less CO2, and therefore leaves a lower carbon footprint. In fact, it is misleading; the correct reasoning should be: we produce a balance zero. Though less is better than much, it cannot be a definite solution.

“Let’s take the analogy with a bath: close the drain, take a 10 litre bucket and pour a bucket of water into the bath every hour. After a while, the bath is full. Regarding the above-mentioned (less is better than much), using a two-decilitre cup instead of a bucket seems to be better. In fact, we saved time, but did not solve the problem, just postponed it. Similarly, recycling plastics is definitely good, because we get things under control, but the saved time should be used to intensively consider full eco-friendly solutions.  Even bioplastics cannot be produced entirely without leaving a carbon footprint; the energy needed to produce them will also leave a footprint behind. So, the basic idea is: let’s return to the nature what we took from it,” says Professor.

Properties that count

Still, there is a question of properties. Conventional starch is a polymer which can be used to make e.g. a bag. The bag is sensitive to moisture; it can tear or dissolve at higher temperature. It is eco-friendly, but also has some disadvantages. To improve its properties, some manufacturers have added a synthetic polymer, thus reducing the feature of eco-friendliness. Besides, decomposition of some types of synthetic polymers releases carcinogenic substances.

All the former solutions might have worked at the time of their origin, since they were generally a step forward. However, the current requirements are different. “We’ve found a trick of how to produce the plastics from other than fossil sources; it is biodegradable and meets the desired necessary technological features. We have balanced the three aspects; that is what makes our solution unique.”

A new process for producing movable, self-adjusting materials systems with standard 3D printers has been developed in Germany. The systems can undergo complex shape changes, by being pre-programmed to contracting and expanding under the influence of moisture. Researchers at the University of Freiburg and the University of Stuttgart modelled their development on the movement mechanisms of the climbing plant known as the air potato (Dioscorea bulbifera).

Renewable base for thermoelectric textiles

A thread made of conductive cellulose is paving the way for electronic textiles made from renewable materials. A research team at Chalmers University of Technology has already sewn these electrically-conductive cellulose threads into a fabric using a standard household sewing machine to produce a thermoelectric textile that generates a small amount of electricity when it is heated on one side – for example, by body heat. At a temperature difference of 37 degrees Celsius, the textile can generate around 0.2 microwatts of electricity.

On 9 June the ClusterXchange Support Office of ECCP, DG GROW and EISMEA hosted a webinar for the European Cluster Partnerships│Excellence (Partnerships). It was an occasion for the Partnerships to share experiences on the ClusterXchange mobility scheme and prepare for the physical exchanges to be hosted in the coming months.

Context

ClusterXchange is a pilot mobility scheme supporting short-term exchanges between cluster actors from different industrial ecosystems. The ClusterXchange scheme is implemented by the Partnerships with assistance from the ECCP.

Benoit Esmanne from the European Commission’s DG GROW started the session by welcoming the participants and reminding that it was the occasion to take stock about the experiences so far as the first physical exchanges were about to start.

In the first part of the webinar, some key figures were shared by the ClusterXchange Support Office on the status of the ClusterXchange scheme. So far, 80 virtual exchanges took place supported by 11 Partnerships. In addition, two exchanges are ongoing, and three exchanges are upcoming. The Support Office then provided information on the recent developments of the scheme and upcoming activities.

This presentation was followed two Partnerships, EXTRATEX and Recipe4Mobility, sharing their experiences on their recently conducted virtual exchanges. Leonardo Marchetti from EXTRATEX presented the organisation of virtual seminars, virtual visits, and virtual B2B and C2C meetings, while Giulia Maifrini for RECIPE4Mobility gave details on the trainings and coaching sessions given by an external trainer.

In the last session, the Support Office clarified some aspects related to the exchanges, gave some tips to prepare the upcoming physical exchanges and provided solutions to commonly encountered issues.

Partnerships were encouraged to give feedback on the scheme and its added value, as well as on aspects to improve in the future.

The webinar presentations are available on the ClusterXchange document repository.

AECIM is co-organizing a Virtual Brokerage Event on June 22nd for the Call for Proposals for the Cluster 4 focused on the Industry topics under Destinations 1 and 2.

Progress in digital and industrial technologies, including in space, shape all sectors of the economy and society. They transform the way industry develops, produce new products and services, and are central to any sustainable future. The COVID-19 crisis of 2020 has shown the necessity to strengthen Europe’s industrial base, enhancing its resilience and flexibility both in terms of technologies and supply chains to reduce EU dependencies on third countries.

It has also created a new urgency around addressing key societal challenges like sustainability or inclusiveness. In a globalized world of heightened uncertainties and volatile geopolitical interests, what is at stake is not only Europe’s prosperity and economic competitiveness, but also its ability to autonomously source and provide crucial raw materials, technologies, and services that are safe and secure for the industry as a whole.

Registered participants will be able to conduct bilateral meetings with interested counterparts and stakeholders. The main goal is to help participants form relevant consortia.

Target Groups

  • Start-up and Spin-off
  • Small and Medium Enterprises
  • Large Companies
  • Universities, Research Centers
  • Other organizations looking for commercial, technological or research partners from Europe and beyond.

Key deadlines

  • Registration: 14th May - 22nd June
  • Meeting selection: 1st June - 22nd June
  • Brokerage Event: 22nd June
  • Languages: English
  • Cost: free of charge

Clutex celebrates 15 years of presence within the industry...
News Photo

Let's wish Clutex a happy anniversary.

stay strong, healthy and successful in the future!

CLUSTER - by 2020 for the majority of the population, not only in the Czech Republic, was just another foreign word. Then came COVID and suddenly the word got the meaning “area with big occurrence of a virus ’.

There is a large occurrence of something completely different in the CLUTEX cluster - ideas, solutions, collaboration, sharing experience. These expressions contain fifteen years in common work of companies and organizations associated with the textile and the clothing industry in the Czech Republic.

17 companies from almost all Czech regions decided to this cooperation in March 2006. They have recently agreed on the main areas of activity of the established cluster technical textile:

  • Sharing knowledge, skills and experiences
  • Common propagation and marketing
  • Collaborative research and development
  • Common searching of new solutions & contacts

Great results of cooperation inside the cluster also drew attention abroad - today the cluster and its members cooperate with similar entities across the Europe (Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Finland, etc.). The cluster's activities were presented as part of participation in trade fairs and missions in addition to Europe at three other continents.

During a pandemic, we react flexibly and move on to the online mode, companies very fast and effectively changed their production portfolio towards to the face masks, respirators, nano-filters etc.

15 years of the cluster's existence also brought new requirements to the cluster itself - to the internal organization, financial management, membership development and sustainability of the cluster. Thanks to the good work we gained a bronze award Cluster Management Excellence. This year we are working to win the award silver, which will bring the cluster beyond prestige also better access, especially to international projects.

At present, the number of member companies has doubled and the cluster became a recognized industry authority in support of research and innovation in the textile sector industry.

For the next period, the cluster has a wide range of topics to address:

  • Is it possible to see the blue field of flax again instead of the yellow field with rape?
  • How can we deal with the topic of circular economics - will we increase the share of textile waste processing into the form of raw material for further processing?
  • Can we ensure, by accessible routes, that public transport seats can clean themselves?

Many people think that technical textiles are only the geotextiles or non-woven textiles, which are used, for example, in their garden. Yes, there are technical textiles as well, but we can find they elsewhere and they can also be very attractive - for example, functional clothing is a beautiful example that we use almost every day (of course except for the face masks and respirator nowadays).

Towards Green Transition Facility; A new initiative by the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP)
News Photo

At early March, 2021 the ECCP launched a new initiative to enable clusters registered at the ECCP to promote green transition skills amongst their members through technical advisory support by highly qualified advisors. The objective was that selected clusters shall be trained and advised on a range of green transition topics so they can support their cluster members (especially SMEs) to become more resource efficient.

The services shall be tailor-made and focused on the specific needs and challenges of each selected cluster.

The intended benefits of ‘Towards Green Transition’ include:

  •  Improved resource efficiency of European SMEs within ECCP clusters;
  • Support for green entrepreneurship through hands-on technical advice and support;
  • Best use of opportunities for greener and more efficient value (supply) chains; and
  • Facilitated market access for green SMEs within clusters.

The types of technical support range from one-on-one teaching, guidance documents and direct consultancy to workshops and webinars. Resilient business models, sustainable investments, energy efficiency, waste management, circular economy and sustainable innovation are some of the fields beneficiaries will be advised on.

The winners were announced on the 3 May and today, 26th May has been held the 1st meeting with the 25 clusters that are going to participate in this initiative.

Most of these 25 clusters are industrials ones dealing with construction, energy, textile, green chemistry, advanced materials, transport, food, wood or sport. All of them with a common aim: support SMEs towards green transition. Ateval (Fomentex is Ateval’s foundation) will participate in consortium with other textile European clusters in this initiative.

Furthermore, After the training, the clusters should demonstrate that the requested knowledge/training has been transferred to SMEs.

CLUTEX celebrates 15 years of presence in the industry
News Photo Let us to wish Clutex a happy anniversary, be strong, healthy and successful for the future!

"CLUSTER" by 2020 for the majority of the population, not only in the Czech Republic, was just another foreign word.

Let us to wish Clutex a happy anniversary, be strong, healthy and successful for the future!

Promoting policies and procedures which integrate social, environmental, ethical, human rights or consumer concerns into business operations are crucial components for a company’s competitiveness while achieving a positive impact on society.

With that in mind, Fomentex carried out a comprehensive number of courses on various subjects regarding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, not only with the Textile Sector in mind but also reminding the attendees of the very important aspects of Social Responsibility, promoting a more sustainable and equal environment.

Due to the ongoing public health crisis regarding the ‘COVID-19’ outbreak, most of the activities proposed were set on an online platform, but that didn’t stop the 193 participants of showing and participating actively on the various debates after each session training, addressing specific issues, sharing their perspectives and learning new ones.

As a result of the very positive and enlightening experience, Fomentex is already focusing on the next event.

European Strategic Cluster Partnerships for Excellence
News Photo Extratex is part of the ESCP-4X partnerships initiative gathering 69 cluster organisations from 21 EU and COSME participating countries.

European Strategic Cluster Partnerships for Excellence (ESCP-4x) are transnational cluster partnerships selected under the European Cluster Excellence Programme as part of the European Commission’s COSME programme. The action aims at facilitating cross-cluster networking and learning, to support the professionalisation of specialised and customised business support services to SMEs. The action is will help drive the development of cluster management excellence and formation of strategic cross-regional collaboration between industrial clusters across Europe.

The third generation of European Cluster Partnerships for Excellence received the new “ESCP-4x” label. This aligns them with the other Cluster Initiatives of the European Commission, and highlights the new “ClusterXchange” activity of the action (more information on the two first generations of Cluster Excellence partnerships can be found here).

ESCPs-4x are tasked with the following activities:

  • Cluster management skills development to boost excellence in delivering SME support
  • Cluster strategy setting at individual and European partnership levels
  • Support to the implementation of these strategies (e.g. through twinning, networking, and joint collaboration activities for SMEs)
  • Implementation of the pilot ClusterXchange programme

The ClusterXchange programme supports short-term exchanges to better connect Europe’s industrial clusters and ecosystems.

The first wave of ESCP-4x (2020-2021) is composed of 13 EU Cluster Partnerships bringing together 69 cluster organisations from across 21 European and COSME participating countries. The action was kicked-off on the 3rd February 2020 for a period of two years (until 2021). More information on the industrial and geographical sectors covered can be found in the figure below. A full list of ESCP-4x can be found here and new about partnerships here.

Extratex H2020 project launched in March 2020
News Photo The Extratex project, coordinated by NTT, has been launched in March 2020.

Objectives

The partnership aims at enhancing the level of excellence through strategic plans and joint strategies; in particular, EXTRATEX will bring together clusters in different industrial sectors with a high potentiality of collaboration in technological innovation and technology transfer, namely textile, transports and sustainable materials.
The project will enhance innovation capacities, business models, knowledge and skill levels and other key competitive factors that will determine future business opportunities and increased capacities for European industrial actors. Only by developing advanced strategies in cross-sector domains and implementing them through comprehensive action plans the European industry can maintain its global market share and current position vis-à-vis emerging non-European competitors.
